A recurrent act at the 63rd annual Emmy Awards set the Twittersphere chirping even more than the massive "Modern Family" haul of golden figurines. The Emmytones, a singing sextet of young television actors and actresses, drew cheers and jeers and even sneers from viewers of the live awards ceremony on September 18.
Emmys host Jane Lynch ("Glee") tried to steal the show with her much quoted quip: "A lot of people are curious why I'm a lesbian," as she introduced the cast of "Entourage." Charlie Sheen ("Two and a Half Men") combined sheepishness and sarcasm onstage, as viewers held their collective breath to see Hollywood's latest loose cannon on live TV.
Still, the Emmytones kept coming back again and again, offering their contrived choral introductions of each television genre, from comedy to drama to reality.
Who were the Emmytones?
The harmonic ensemble and campy humor attempt included Kate Flannery (of "The Office"), Taraji P. Henson (of "Boston Legal"), Zachary Levi (of "Chuck"), Joel McHale (of "Community"), Cobie Smulders (of "How I Met Your Mother") and Wilmer Valderrama (of "That 70s Show").
Hip-hopper L.L. Cool J joined the sextet for one number. "It was not his finest moment," said one Texas Tweeter in a much-forwarded post.
With the lads in traditional tuxedos, spiffed up with gold lame lapels, and the ladies in strapless turquoise tutus with matching gold sashes, the Emmytones self-mockingly evoked a long-lost lounge act. Perhaps stage-effect bubbles would have completed the scene.
At least Henson can sing. The 31-year-old lent her pipes to the soundtrack of "Hustle & Flow" in 2005, singing "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp" to critical acclaim with costar Terence Howard.
Tweeters traded Emmytones barbs all night long.
Celebrity watchers at Zap2Zit summarized Emmytones Tweeters this way: "Emmytones reactions are surprisingly polarized."
A blogger known as "The Sapphire Report" called the Emmytones "hilarious."
Most Emmytones responses were less kind.
"They should have a new rule next year," suggested Emily, a Los Angeles blogger. "If your show gets canceled, you have to sing in the Emmytones."
Several suggested the Emmytones singers ought to be offered extra compensation, future Emmy Awards nominations or even wardrobe makeovers for their appearances.
Howard Sherman, a New York theatre blogger, suggested alternate venues for the barbershop-like group. "The Emmytones are not accepting bookings for weddings, bar mitzvahs and tractor pulls," he Tweeted.
YouTube CNTalkShow's Billy Eichner suggested that Anne Hathaway ought to be added to the group for future appearances. Of course, that presumes the Emmytones aren't voted off the proverbial island by Andy Samberg's The Lonely Island, along with Michael Bolton in his Captain Jack Sparrow getup.
What was your take on the Emmytones? Did you love them or hate them? Should the Emmys bring the Emmytones back next year?
