SAN ANTONIO ? It was a flat tire on the way home from a birthday celebration for his fianc?e. It became an even bigger tragedy.

An alleged drunk driver smashes into the disabled car just after midnight along I-10? as Eric Canales was trying to put a spare on it.

??Wrong place, wrong time. In the blink of an eye, we got hit,? said Canales. ?If I had been still getting stuff from the trunk, I would?ve been hit.?

Authorities say 28-year old Jessica Rodriguez and her 10-year old daughter, Kaylee Flores, were inside the car, struck by a Jeep Cherokee with enough force to crush the Corolla and push it 150 feet.

Canales said, ?I knew in my mind she died instantly on impact. But you don?t want to think that when it?s the person you love.?

Rodriguez was killed. Her daughter later died at the hospital.

Police arrested 25-year old Christopher LaMar, who was behind the wheel of the SUV. Police suspect he had been drinking.

Brandi Rose recognized her friend Jessica?s mangled car from news reports.

?Look what you?ve done; you?ve killed a mother and a daughter. Is it worth it? No,? said Rose.? ?Call a cab. He should?ve been responsible. He was very irresponsible. And through his actions, we lost two, great, amazing people.?

Emergency crews and paramedics who arrived first on the scene could only embrace Canales, as he struggled to understand the few seconds that changed his life forever.

?They were planning a wedding. Now, for what?? added Rose.

Those nuptial plans have been replaced with funeral arrangements ?for two special people.

LaMar remains jailed on two counts of intoxication manslaughter.??

Friends of Rodriguez said?the 28-year old?used to work at the Basement Bar & Lounge on 244 Losoya Street. They plan to take a collection tonight from guests to help defray the funeral costs.

Rose said the family has set up a trust through Security Service Federal Credit Union under Jessica Rodriguez's name.
