In his latest ? Letter from the Producer?, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn producer Naoki Yoshida said that the alpha test for the game will begin on Monday October 29. The producer also states that players who couldn?t get into this testing phase will have more chances to play the game before release in the next testing phases.

Final Fantasy XIV, second online-only entry after Final Fantasy XI in the acclaimed Square-Enix JRPG series ,was released on September 2010 on PC with a PS3 version to follow.
The game, however, was met with widespread negative reception: the game?s structure was considered broken, many bugs and glitches were present, the game?s economy was considered excessively complicated and the overall opinion was that the game was released in an incomplete state, rendered almost unplayable by bad design choices.

In December 2010 Square Enix president Yoichi Wada announced a shift in the game?s development team: producer Naoki Yoshida took over producer and director?s duties after previous producer Hiromichi Tanaka had resigned. A few changes were made to the game, improving overall gameplay.
But it?s on October 2011 that things really started taking a different turn with the announcement of a Final Fantasy XIV version 2.0 called A Realm Reborn, not just a simple revision but a total relaunch of the game: a new server system will be implemented as well as a new graphics engine, new interface, additional character creation options, new jobs and more player vs player content.

The final release date for Final Fantasy XIV: A Real Reborn is still set for a generic 2013. The long delayed PS3 version of the game will be released shortly after the PC version.

John Birch Society protests Belfast's ... - Bangor Daily News

BELFAST, Maine ? The lunchtime crowd walking downtown on Wednesday may have wondered what ICLEI is and why it needed to be kicked out of town, as banners held on all four corners of the intersection of Main and High streets urged be done.

Protesters from the John Birch Society, a conservative group formed in 1958 to push for limited government and personal freedoms, said that the city was a member of the International Council on Local Environmental Initiatives. That group advocates for municipal policies that reduce energy consumption and mitigate climate change.

The John Birch Society protesters ? about a dozen in all ? also drew a connection between ICLEI and the United Nations? Agenda 21, a land-use planning initiative.

But it turns out the city is not a member of ICLEI.

A city committee, the Belfast Climate and Energy Committee, joined ICLEI and paid the $600 annual dues a few years ago to get information about how to reduce energy consumption in municipal buildings and promote similar strategies for residences and businesses, Belfast Assistant Planner James Francomano said Wednesday.

Roger Lee, a three-term city councilor seeking a fourth term, was a member of that committee and said Wednesday it is essentially defunct. The city stopped paying dues to ICLEI in 2010, but the organization?s website still lists Belfast as a member.

Hal Shurtleff of Boston, a regional field director of the John Birch Society who was among the protesters, said he concluded that Belfast was a member by reviewing ICLEI?s website. Wednesday?s protest was still valid, he said after the banners were taken down, because ICLEI is part of a larger effort to limit personal freedom.

?ICLEI is one tentacle? of other, larger efforts to impose limits on personal freedom, he said.

Two women holding the banners joined Shurtleff in denouncing ICLEI, saying the organization wanted to prevent people from purchasing certain kinds of vehicles and ending single residences because of their impact on climate change. Shurtleff said climate change was a myth.

Shurtleff is scheduled to present information about Agenda 21 at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, at the Belfast Free Library.

City officials contacted ICLEI Wednesday to ask that Belfast be removed from the list of members.

Lee expressed dismay that ICLEI was cast as a villain.

?They?re a perfectly fine organization. They?re assisting municipalities all over the world,? he said.

Membership allowed the committee to receive software to estimate how energy use might be cut in municipal buildings. Committee members also were able to attend regional meetings to learn what other towns and cities were doing on the energy-efficiency front, Lee said.

?It?s pretty small-scale stuff,? he said. ICLEI does have ?a particular regimen they want you to follow. Our committee never did that.?

The city has improved energy efficiency at City Hall, and plans to do the same at the police station, the Belfast Free Library and the Boat House, Lee said.

A handout given to pedestrians on Wednesday featuring Shurtleff?s photo and biography noted that ? Agenda 21 will require a profound reorientation of all human society, unlike anything the world has ever experienced.?

During the protest, Shurtleff said planning and environmental initiatives conflicted with the personal liberty protections of the U.S. Constitution.

Lee remained perplexed.

?It?s hard to even understand [the protesters?] position,? Lee said. ?Apparently there?s something wrong with trying to live sustainably.?

SPORTS: Seymour battles Castle in 3 sets for regional win

Staff Reports

EVANSVILLE ? Seymour pounded its way past Castle to capture its second straight volleyball regional title on Tuesday night, 25-13, 25-8, 25-11.

?Definitely the key tonight was blocking,? Owls coach Angie Lucas said. ?We had four solo blocks and 16 assist blocks, and we just totally dominated at the net tonight. That really changed the whole game. It frustrated the other team. They are a scrappy team, and they tried to keep the ball going as much as they could, but we just dominated at the net.?

The Owls also were solid offensively. The team was 83 of 88 in hitting with 38 kills, and Abby Speer led the way by going 19 of 20 with 11 kills, and Jessica Lucas had 34 assists. In serving, the team was 68 of 71 with seven aces, and Chandler Clark led the way by going 30 of 30 with one ace. Hayden Dailey had a team-high four aces on 15-of-15 serving.

?Offensively, we were very strong,? Lucas said. ?We only had five hitting errors for the entire match, and we were just clicking on all cylinders tonight. It was a very good win for us.?

The positive for the Owls is they get to play semistate on their home court. At 11?a.m. Saturday, Class 4A No. 9 Seymour (30-5) will take on No. 10 Cathedral (22-9), and that will be followed by No. 4 Avon (32-5) facing No. 3 Columbus East (31-4). Columbus East won regional on Tuesday in three sets, while Cathedral won in four, and Avon won in five.

?We?re thrilled to death to be able to play on our home court and get back to where we were last year,? Lucas said. ?It says a lot about this team and how hard they?ve worked, and the coaching staff is just very proud of them. We?re excited, and we?ll be ready to play on Saturday.?

Cougars net win over Warriors

NEW ALBANY ? The Trinity Lutheran volleyball team defended its Class A regional title Tuesday night by defeating Christian Academy 27-25, 19-25, 25-21, 25-11 on the Warriors? floor.

?The girls had fun with it,? Cougars coach Chelsey Hackman said. ?I tried to give them things to kind of keep their minds off the environment and just keep their minds on what they were doing while they?re playing out there. I think that?s what helps. I think when they get out there and they don?t clam up and freak out, it?s when they play their best, and if I can get their mind off of it, they do pretty well.?

The fourth set was tied at 2 before the Cougars went on an 8-1 run and remained on top the rest of the way. A block by Mallory Barker gave the Cougars a 12-5 lead; a kill by Haylee Barker set the score at 14-6, and a kill by Hannah Barker gave them a 21-10 lead. Match point came on a Christian Academy passing error.

?It was loud in here, obviously. I can barely talk. It was loud in here all night,? Hackman said. ?That team had a lot of fight. They had some big hitters and good defense, too. They played well at the end of the season and really came into it.?

The Cougars jumped on top 7-4 in the first set before the Warriors rebounded to take an 11-10 lead. Back-to-back kills by Mallory Barker, followed by a Christian Academy passing error, put Trinity in the lead at 12-11.

The Warriors rallied to take leads of 23-22 and 25-24 before the Cougars rallied for the win. Set point came on a Christian Academy hitting error.

The second set was tied at 6 before Trinity moved on top 18-17 on a Christian Academy attacking error. A kill by Sarah Stuckwisch gave Trinity its final lead at 18-17.

The third set was tied at 6 and 11 before the Cougars took control with a 5-0 run. They had a 22-21 lead before scoring the final three points, with set point coming on a Warrior attacking error.

Mallory Barker, who had 12 kills for the Cougars, said, ?I was just listening to the back row. They were doing a really good job telling me to go line and hit around the blockers or hit high so it went off their hands, and we got the point easily.?

Barker moved into the starting lineup this past year when Katie Jo Curry was injured. She said this regional title ?feels about the same. Winning a regional is really exciting.?

Hackman said her team will need to play better in Saturday?s Loogootee Semistate.

?I?d take a little bit better play,? she said. ?We had a lot of mistakes that we didn?t need to make, but you?re going to have that.?

The Cougars are 32-4, while the Warriors finished at 24-6.

Nintendo cuts forecast as mobile games dampen console demand ...

Nintendo Co., the world?s largest maker of video-game machines, cut full-year profit and sales forecasts as free titles on smartphones and tablets dissuade consumers from buying separate gaming devices.

Annual sales of Nintendo?s flagship 3DS handheld player, introduced last year, will be 17.5 million units, 5.4% lower than previously estimated, the company said in a statement today. Nintendo also lowered its forecast for 3DS software sales 4.1% and said it will sell its new Wii U model at a loss.

Chief Executive Officer Satoru Iwata, 52, reduced the full-year net income forecast 70% as demand slumped and a stronger yen eroded earnings from overseas sales of titles such as ?Super Mario Bros. U.? The Kyoto-based company, Sony Corp. and Microsoft Corp., the world?s three-biggest video-game console makers, face increasing competition from devices including Apple Inc.?s iPhone and iPad, which are capable of downloading and playing games, some for free.

?Consumers are content to use their smartphones and tablet computers to play games,? said Makoto Kikuchi, chief executive officer at Myojo Asset Management Japan Co., a Tokyo-based hedge fund advisory firm. ?The 3DS is really failing.?

Net income may be 6 billion yen (US$75-million) for the year ending March 31, compared with Nintendo?s previous estimate of a 20 billion yen profit, the Kyoto, Japan-based company said in a statement today. The outlook compares with the 10.6 billion-yen average of 21 analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg.

FarmVille, CityVille

Nintendo fell 1.7% to 10,290 yen in Osaka before the announcement, extending its decline this year to 2.9%.

U.S. sales of packaged video games have fallen for almost two years as buying shifts to digital downloads, and games such as ?FarmVille? and ?CityVille? are played on websites including Facebook Inc.?s social-networking service.

Retail sales of video-game hardware, software and accessories in the U.S., the world?s biggest video-game market, fell 24% last month from a year earlier, led by a 39% plunge in game-console sales, NPD Group Inc. said Oct. 11. That followed a 20% drop in August, according to the Port Washington, New York-based researcher.

?The chances of consumers buying our software would be less and less if what we make isn?t so much different? from games offered for smartphones and tablet computers, Iwata told reporters today. ?We have to make games that smartphones or tablets can?t do.?

IPad Mini

Apple, the world?s biggest maker of tablet computers, has sold more than 100 million iPads since co-founder Steve Jobs introduced the device in January 2010. The Cupertino, California-based company unveiled a smaller, cheaper iPad mini Oct. 23 to keep customers from buying low-cost tablets from Microsoft and Google Inc.

Apple?s AppStore has more than 400,000 applications, which have been downloaded more than 35 billion times. While some versions of games such as ?Angry Birds? are free, customers will have to pay for other titles, or upgrades.

In comparison, titles for Nintendo?s Wii U gaming device start at about 5,000 yen.

The company cut its full-year software sales target for the 3DS to 70 million units from 73 million, the statement said.

Nintendo, which got 72% of its revenue from the Americas and Europe last fiscal year, booked a 23 billion-yen exchange-rate loss in this fiscal year?s first half after the Japanese currency was stronger against the dollar and euro than Nintendo projected.

First-Half Loss

The company posted a 43.2 billion-yen loss last fiscal year, its first since going public in 1962, as it cut the price of the 3DS amid slow demand.

Nintendo?s net loss for the fiscal first half ended September 30 narrowed to 28 billion yen from a 70.3 billion-yen loss a year earlier, the company said today. That compared with the 22.3 billion-yen loss average of four analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg.

First-half sales fell 6.8% to 201 billion yen from 215.7 billion yen a year earlier, Nintendo said today. The company had an operating loss of 29.2 billion yen, compared with a year-earlier loss of 57.3 billion yen and the 22.4 billion-yen loss average of analyst estimates.

Iwata is counting on the Wii U home gaming machine, to be released in the U.S. next month, to revive sales. The machine, set to go on sale in Japan in December, features a 6.2-inch touch-screen controller that lets users wirelessly connect to the console and shift the display between a TV and the device.

?The company needs to introduce something interesting, so that consumers would use both the iPhone and other game devices,? said Koji Toda, chief fund manager at Tokyo-based Resona Bank Ltd., which oversees about US$188-billion. ?If the Wii U turns out to be more fun than people expect, it will make everyone want to buy one.?

Wii U

Nintendo aims to sell 5.5 million Wii U consoles this fiscal year, it said in a statement today. The device will cost from 26,250 yen in Japan and US$300 in the U.S., the company said last month. The machine will sell at a loss, Senior Managing Director Yoshihiro Mori said today at a press conference in Osaka.

?Manufacturing costs are expensive, and we priced the machine at a level customers would accept,? Iwata said at the press conference. ?It?s important for us to develop a healthy business next fiscal year by combining sales of hardware and software.?

Last month, Sony introduced a smaller, lighter version of the PlayStation 3, priced from 24,980 yen in Japan and US$249 in the U.S. Microsoft?s Xbox is priced from 19,800 yen in Japan and US$199.99 in U.S. stores.

?The Wii U could see a strong start,? Haruka Mori, a Tokyo-based analyst at Barclays Plc, said in a report this month. Nintendo?s profits next fiscal year ?hinge on the sustainability of the Wii U?s momentum after the new year.?

San Diego media baron promotes conservative causes

SAN DIEGO (AP) ? The new media barons of America's eighth-largest city are upfront about wanting to use their newspaper to promote their agenda of downtown development and politically conservative causes ? and they are making their points in a brash, bare-knuckle style.

Douglas Manchester and his partner John Lynch gave their 143-year-old newspaper a new slogan ? "The World's Greatest Country & America's Finest City" ? ran a front-page editorial that declared their plan to reshape the city's downtown waterfront their highest priority, and forecast doom if President Barack Obama wins re-election.

Manchester, who became wealthy building hotels during the dawn of San Diego's downtown renaissance and insists on being called "Papa Doug," bought The San Diego Union-Tribune last year and its most serious competitor, the North County Times, this month. As he and Lynch eye expansion to Los Angeles and other major cities, they are frank about seeking to use their new platforms to advance their agenda ? and they think they can make a profit while they're at it.

Lynch calls the editorial viewpoint pro-family, pro-military and pro-America.

"We think our country is on the edge of real, real danger, and you have to stand up, and that was a huge part of why we bought this," said Lynch, vice chairman and chief executive officer of U-T San Diego, the newspaper's new name.

The editorial page named Obama the worst U.S. president and predicted a second term will result in "Arab terror states" attacking Israel, "death panels" rationing health care, income tax rates between 60 and 70 percent for many Californians and an attempt to get taxpayers to pay for late-term abortions. It warned of an effort to erase "In God We Trust" from U.S. currency.

Manchester, 70, is likened to a smaller market version of Rupert Murdoch and earlier moguls like William Randolph Hearst and Robert McCormick who used newspapers to wield influence. The unusually strong editorial tone stands out in an era when many newspapers are owned by corporations.

"Hard to believe UT could go further to the right and for the developers but now it is owned by the developers!" Ron Belanger, a 70-year-old retired Navy aviator, wrote on a Facebook page for critics of the new owners called "Bring the L.A. Times back to San Diego."

"It's a strong voice for a minority viewpoint in the media," countered Josef Horowitz, a 67-year-old retired college administrator who renewed his subscription in March, having canceled it under previous owners because he felt the editorials were mealy-mouthed and too liberal.

Lynch said Editor Jeff Light has complete control of news coverage and that neither he nor Manchester, as chairman and publisher, meddle.

"Aside from the activist stance of the owners, I am someone who is scrupulously concerned with fairness," Light said.

Lynch, a former radio station owner with a linebacker's build at age 65, speaks bluntly. He recently wrote Scott Peters, a Port of San Diego commissioner and Democratic nominee for Congress, demanding to know his position on a shipping contract to unload bananas that could complicate the publisher's plans for the downtown waterfront redevelopment. He wanted an exit clause.

"Otherwise this will become a major issue in the campaigns and the UT will be forced to lead a campaign to disband the PORT," he wrote.

The email correspondence, dated in early August and released after a public records request by KPBS/I-Newsource, came as Peters wages a bid to unseat U.S. Rep. Brian Bilbray, a Republican endorsed by the newspaper.

In May, Lynch lashed out when the city warned of a fine for hanging a promotional banner outside its offices. He agreed to take it down while seeking approval for a large video screen atop the five-story building.

"If it weren't for the digital sign pending approval, I would instruct our folks to run a piece on how this is so reflective of this city being anti-business," Lynch wrote a city councilman's aide, according to an email published by the San Diego Reader.

Lynch said his missive about the sign was intended as a joke and questions why other news organizations haven't taken a harder look at the port.

Dean Nelson, director of Point Loma Nazarene University's journalism program, said he hasn't seen blatant examples of editorial views seeping into news coverage and is skeptical how much newspaper editorials shape public policy. The question that will be watched most closely in the beleaguered U.S. newspaper industry, he said, is whether the business succeeds.

Tim McGuire, a journalism professor at Arizona State University, said San Diego is at the forefront of what he predicts will be a major trend of wealthy people buying newspapers to feed their egos and push for their agendas.

"People are going to buy and treat newspapers like sports teams," he said. "It's a toy, it's fun to have, and it gives you great power."

Manchester embraced the "Papa Doug" moniker after a Little League coach used it to distinguish him from a son, also named Doug. "Papa Doug" sold interests in two giant downtown hotels but still has major holdings in San Diego and is pursuing prospects, including a $1.3 billion hotel and office complex on the downtown waterfront.

Lynch said Manchester was unavailable for an interview. The pair are old friends and allies since they led a failed campaign to move San Diego's airport out of downtown in the 1990s.

Manchester lives lavishly, spending $550,000 on his 65th birthday bash, Elizabeth Manchester said in court filings that ended their 43-year marriage in 2010. She claimed he had $57 million in the bank.

His $125,000 donation to support a 2008 ballot initiative to ban gay marriage in California drew protests ? a decision Lynch says his partner regrets.

"If you're a Catholic, marriage is between a man and a woman," Lynch said. "He had no idea there would be these kind of ramifications."

Manchester invested in San Diego-area resident Dinesh D'Souza's hit documentary, "2016: Obama's America," which portrays a gloomy future if the president is re-elected, according to Lynch.

Manchester bought the U-T from private equity firm Platinum Equity LLC for $110 million and picked up the North County Times from Lee Enterprises Inc. for $12 million. Last week, the Times' print edition was folded into the U-T.

The U-T has spent $5 million on a television venture with a studio in the middle of the newsroom and 12 hours of daily cable programming that highlights Lynch's radio background. The Sunday edition features more in-depth reports and military coverage.

Lynch said the privately held U-T is "significantly profitable" but declined to be specific about revenue or earnings. One test comes when the Audit Bureau of Circulations releases semiannual paid circulation figures Oct. 30.

Amid a brutal decline in the newspaper business, Manchester and Lynch hope to extend their San Diego empire to other major U.S. cities, eyeing adjacent markets like Los Angeles.

"We're trying to do what we can to change the direction of this country," Lynch said.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? South Korea banned activists from launching anti-Pyongyang leaflets across the heavily fortified border into North Korea on Monday in an unusual move to halt their propaganda campaign.

North Korea's military said last week it would strike if South Korean activists carried out their plan to fly balloons carrying the leaflets across the border. South Korea pledged to retaliate if it was attacked.

Hundreds of South Korean police were mobilized to seal off roads to prevent activists and other people from entering a launch site near the border, police said. Before Monday's action, the government had implored activists to stop their campaign, but it cited freedom of speech in not making further attempts to intervene.

Residents near the launch site were also asked to evacuate to underground bunkers, according to local official Kim Jin-a.

North Korea has regularly issued similar threats without following through. But Seoul's Yonhap news agency reported Monday the entry ban was imposed as South Korea detected North Korea uncovering artillery muzzle covers and deploying troops at artillery fire positions in possible preparation for attack. Yonhap cited no source for the information.

South Korea's Defense Ministry said it couldn't confirm the report but said its troops have been placed on a high alert to cope with any potential North Korean aggression.

Dozens of activists, mostly North Korean defectors, planned to send about 200,000 leaflets critical of North Korea's young leader Kim Jong Un and his country's nuclear weapons program.

Lead activist Park Sang-hak said the entry ban is tantamount to yielding to Pyongyang's threat and his group will try to find another place to float leaflets. "It's surrender. It's clearly surrender," he said.

Ties between the rival Koreas were badly strained after two deadly attacks blamed on North Korea killed 50 South Koreans in 2010.

The Korean Peninsula officially remains at war because an armed conflict in the 1950s ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty.

(AP) ? A landmark mosque in Aleppo was burned, scarred by bullets and trashed ? the latest casualty of Syria's civil war ? and President Bashar Assad on Monday ordered immediate repairs to try to stem Muslim outrage at the desecration of the 12th century site.

The Umayyad Mosque suffered extensive damage, as has the nearby medieval covered market, or souk, which was gutted by a fire that was sparked by fighting two weeks ago. The market and the mosque are centerpieces of Aleppo's walled Old City, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Government troops had been holed up in the mosque for months before rebels launched a push this week to drive them out. Activists and Syrian government officials blamed each other for the weekend fire at the mosque.

Rebel supporters also alleged that regime forces defaced the shrine with offensive graffiti and drank alcohol inside, charges bound to further raise religious tensions in Syria. Many of the rebels are Sunni Muslims, while the regime is dominated by Alawites, or followers of an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

"It's all blackened now," activist Mohammad al-Hassan said of the site, also known as the Great Mosque. One of Syria's oldest and largest shrines, it was built around a vast courtyard and enclosed in a compound adjacent to the ancient citadel.

Al-Hassan said the army had been using the mosque as a base because of its strategic location in the Old City and he blamed Assad for the destruction.

"He burns down the country and its heritage, and then he says he will rebuild it. Why do you destroy it to begin with?" al-Hassan said in a telephone interview from Aleppo.

Fighting has destroyed large parts of Aleppo, Syria's largest city with 3 million residents and its former business capital. Activists say more than 33,000 people have died in the conflict, which began in March 2011 and has turned into a civil war.

Five of Syria's six World Heritage sites have been damaged in the fighting, according to UNESCO, the U.N.'s cultural agency. Looters have broken into one of the world's best-preserved Crusader castles, Crac des Chevaliers, and ruins in the ancient city of Palmyra have been damaged.

Both rebels and regime forces have turned some of Syria's significant historic sites into bases, including citadels and Turkish bath houses, while thieves have stolen artifacts from museums.

Karim Hendili, a Paris-based UNESCO expert who oversees heritage sites in the Arab world, said Aleppo's Old City has been hardest hit. The fire that swept through the souk burned more than 500 shops in the narrow, vaulted passageways, destroying a testament to its flourishing commercial history.

"After the loss of the souk, there is now major damage of the mosque," Hendili said.

The "soul of the city" is really being damaged, he added, "and this is difficult to repair."

Video posted online by activists show a large fire and black smoke raging in the mosque Saturday, and there also are shots of its blackened, pockmarked walls. Debris is strewn on the floors where worshippers once prayed on green and gold carpets.

The videos are consistent with AP's reporting of the incident.

"Assad's thugs set the mosque on fire as a punishment for being defeated by the Free Syrian Army," the caption on one video read.

In another video, a rebel inside the mosque holds up a torn copy of the Muslim holy book, saying: "These are our Qurans. This is our religion, our history."

The rebel in the video also held up an empty bottle, saying it had contained alcohol.

The Syrian government said it pushed back rebels out of the mosque after the weekend fighting, although activists gave conflicting reports on who controls it.

Rami Martini, chief of Aleppo's Chamber of Tourism, blamed rebels for targeting the city's monuments and archaeological treasures. He said the losses were impossible to estimate because of the fighting in the area, but added it could be the most serious damage since an earthquake in 1830s struck the mosque.

Despite the fire, the structure of the mosque appeared to be intact, although a gate that leads to the ancient market was burned, said Martini, who is specialized in repairing archaeological sites and monuments.

The platform inside the mosque, or minbar, and the prayer niche also were damaged by the fire, Martini said. The wooden minbar is identical to the one burned in Jerusalem's al-Aqsa Mosque in 1969, he said.

Valuables were stolen from the mosque's library, Martin said, including a transparent box purported to contain a strand of hair from the Prophet Muhammad, along with centuries-old handwritten copies of the Quran.

Assad issued a presidential decree to form a committee to repair the mosque by the end of 2013, although it's not clear what such a body could do amid a raging civil war. The mosque's last renovations began about 20 years ago and were completed in 2006.

In other developments Monday:

? The Syria military denied reports by a human rights group that it has been dropping cluster bombs ? indiscriminate scattershot munitions ? during fighting. The denial came in a statement carried by the state-run SANA news agency.

Allegations that cluster bombs were used are "baseless and are part of media propaganda that aims to divert international public opinion from crimes committed by armed terrorist groups," the statement said.

The New-York based Human Rights Watch on Sunday cited amateur video and testimony from the front lines in making the allegation that Assad's government has been using the bombs that are banned by most nations in what the group said was a new sign of desperation and disregard for its own people.

? The European Union stepped up pressure on Assad's regime, banning Syrian Arab Airlines from EU airports.

At a meeting in Luxembourg, EU foreign ministers added 28 people to those whose assets are frozen and who are denied EU visas. They also froze the assets of two more companies, including the airline.

? The U.N. envoy on Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, arrived in Baghdad for talks with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and other officials on the neighboring country's civil war. Brahimi is touring the region to try to resolve the Syrian crisis.

? Turkey forced a Syrian-bound plane from Armenia to land in order to search the cargo for weapons. The plane, which was carrying aid for Aleppo, was granted permission to fly in Syrian airspace on condition that it could be searched for military equipment, said Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Selcuk Unal.

After the search, Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc said the cargo contained humanitarian aid and was allowed to continue to Syria.

Last week, Turkey forced a Syrian passenger plane traveling from Moscow to Damascus to land in Ankara on suspicion it carried military gear. Russia, which has backed Assad, said the equipment was spare parts for radar systems.

Over the weekend, Syria and Turkey barred each other's commercial aircraft from flying over their respective territories. The bans came after a week of exchanging fire across their volatile border.

? The Turkish government said the number of Syrian refugees in Turkey surpassed the 100,000 mark and that about 7,000 more were waiting at the border to get in.

Smoking and Adolescent Brain Development | Brain Blogger

Grey smoke over black background

When it comes to substance abuse like smoking or abuse of intoxicating drugs, it is very difficult to determine what a ?safe? limit of exposure is.? Quite often, the initial exposure to mood altering substances like nicotine occurs during the teenage years. The period of adolescence is marked by a tendency towards risk-taking behavior which often results in ?experimental? exposure to psychedelic substances. Adolescents who tend to flirt with danger in this fashion are often convinced that a small trial will not actually have lasting damaging effects. However, research on the development of prefrontal cortex in similarly age-matched animals says otherwise.

The prefrontal cortex in teenagers is in a state of growth and development. Contrary to established notions, brain development continues well into the teenage years and changes in synapses (connections between brain cells that facilitate the transmission of chemical messengers between cells) occur well into adolescence.? Research on adolescent mice and rats shows that exposure to nicotine during this period has long-lasting effects. For starters, nicotine is known to be able to excite neurons bearing nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. In the prefrontal cortex, nicotine has been shown to induce greater expression of a specific subset of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, by 34%. ?In the normal course of development, the number of acetylcholine receptors declines in these cells. This phenomenon is specific to the period of adolescence since a similar increase in the number of receptors is not seen when the initial exposure to nicotine occurs in adulthood, in these animals. Research has also shown that exposure to nicotine in early adolescence enhances the nicotinic ?reward? feeling during adulthood. It is therefore surmised that early exposure to smoking is likely to set the stage for long-term addiction and perhaps it also explains why addiction to nicotine is so prevalent, worldwide.

One might argue that since the teenage years are a short period in the life-span of a person, occasional exposure to nicotine is not likely to leave lasting damage. Here?s the catch. Exposure to nicotine also changes the pattern of synaptic connectivity between neurons in the prefrontal cortex.? The ability of neurons to establish new synaptic connections and develop new firing patterns in response to different stimuli is also known as ?synaptic plasticity?. Neuroscientists have shown that all ?learning? as well as ?information analysis and assimilation in the brain is a net result of the pattern of exchange of neurotransmitter molecules (also referred to as pattern of ?firing?) between neurons which respond to training stimuli. So, the more you learn, the better you get at learning by stimulating your neurons to make new synaptic connections. However, exposure to nicotine in early adolescence, changes the pattern of firing of neurons in the prefrontal cortex. Now this change reduces the capability of neurons in the prefrontal cortex to make new synaptic connections. Therefore exposure to psychedelic and addictive substances like nicotine results in reduced synaptic plasticity and has a negative impact on cognitive processes in adult life.

All these significant changes take place in early adolescence and perhaps parental guidance may play a huge role in preventing nicotine addiction and associated cognitive deficits.
