(AP) ? "American Idol" Season 5 winner Taylor Hicks is getting his own short-term show on the Las Vegas Strip.

Casino officials announced the Alabama native will headline an eight-week show at Bally's Las Vegas beginning June 26.

The singer's show in Las Vegas is a return to where his winning run began in 2005. Hicks had been in New Orleans the night before Hurricane Katrina struck and was given a free airplane voucher when his flight was cancelled.

He used the voucher to fly to Las Vegas, where he auditioned for "American Idol" and ultimately won over viewers with his renditions of southern soul, R&B, country and blues songs.

He's the first "American Idol" winner or finalist to secure a Las Vegas residency.

Steve Harvey tells moviegoers how to "Think Like a Man"

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Comedian Steve Harvey is a veteran of stand-up comedy and television with programs like his sitcom "The Steve Harvey Show" and the game show "Family Feud," which he currently hosts.

This Friday, his 2009 bestselling, non-fiction book "Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man: What Men Really Think About Love, Relationships, Intimacy, and Commitment" gets the big screen treatment in comedy film, "Think Like a Man."

With an all-star cast including Gabrielle Union, Kevin Hart, Michael Ealy, Romany Malco, hip-hop singer Chris Brown and Oscar nominated actress Taraji P. Henson, the film follows four couples, each of whom have their own relationship issues. When the women start reading Harvey's book in order to improve things, the men get wind of it and try to turn the tables.

Harvey, who executive produces the film and has a small role as himself, sat down with Reuters to talk about it, his upcoming syndicated daytime talk show and his dreams of becoming a motivational speaker.

Q: When you wrote this book, did you ever think it had the makings of a feature film?

A: "The possibility of it becoming a movie never even entered my mind. Not for a millisecond. When I wrote the book, my goal was to make the New York Times bestseller list. That was it. I had no idea the book would be as successful as it was."

Q: Once development began on the film, as executive producer, what kind of input did you have?

A: "I thought you've got to have maybe four of the chapters that gained the most attention - the 90-day rule I thought was a big one - and create some couples around them. The only requirement I had was not to colorize this movie. My book is not about color. It's not about race. This is a movie about how guys think. And it really shows women how guys really think, function and operate."

Q: How challenging was it to adapt a self-help book?

A: "The challenge was not making a mockery of my book because it was meant to empower women. I wrote it with my daughters in mind. It was a challenge to stay true to the principles in the book, to be funny without crossing into slapstick and buffoonery. The writers did an excellent job, and I'm proud of the adaptation."

Q: In the film you appear as yourself, an author and expert. How do you feel about being a relationship expert?

A: "People say, 'He's a relationship expert,' but the expertise that I have is that I'm an expert on how men think. If I was an expert at relationships, I wouldn't be in my third marriage! (laughs). But I got being a man down pat."

Q: Your parents were married for 64 years. With role models like that, how could you have been married three times?

A: "I went about it the wrong way. I never sat down with my father and talked about who to pick, how to pick, how to hang in there when it gets tough. We didn't have a lot of talks about it, so I kept trying. I got way off track a few times. I made a lot of mistakes, but those mistakes got me to this point."

Q: This fall, you'll be hosting your own syndicated talk show. How are you preparing?

A: "That's one of the things that's been on the bucket list, and it's finally come true. I've done years of sitting on (talk show) couches as a guest, and I've always been complimented as being a good guest. I've learned a lot from hosts. It's been a great teaching ground for me to host my own show."

Q: With new talk shows from Ricki Lake, Katie Couric and Jeff Probst among others, how will yours be different?

A: "Here's the deal: there will be no one on television funnier than Steve Harvey. Period. (laughs). That can't happen. I've got all my cash banked on that one! I will be controlling the funny. It's going to be a funny show where you can get a good laugh during the daytime."

Q: What else is on your bucket list?

A: "I would love to be a motivational speaker. That's where I think I'm headed. I've had to learn so many principles of success and memorize so many scriptures. I've been through a lot. I can share with people who come from the bottom, how to get to the top."

Q: What would you say was your low point?

A: "I was homeless. I lived in a car for a couple of years. That was the worst. But nothing was worse than when I was 40 and my mom passed away. My mother was the best person I ever knew. Those were the two lowest points."

Q: Why do you feel compelled to help others?

A: "My mom was a Sunday school teacher for 40 years. She always said 'God blesses you to become a blessing.' You can get a big house on the hill and if you don't show anybody else how to get up on that hill, you'll just be up there by yourself.'"

Q: You've done everything from selling Amway to working as a mailman. What have those jobs taught you?

A: "That success is a process. You've got to do a series of things you're uncomfortable doing in order to get to what you want to do. I've had about 11 different jobs. I didn't care for any of them. But that process taught me how to do uncomfortable things. So as I became successful, when it came time to do uncomfortable things to be successful, I was pretty good at it."

NAB 2012 wrap-up

http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/19/nab-2012-wrap-up/

"That's a wrap!" Finally, an appropriate use for that industry cliché, since, ya know, we really are at a motion picture / television conference. As our first trip to the National Association of Broadcasters' annual event in Las Vegas fires its last frame, we're going to roll to the credits, honoring all those products that enabled us to justify spending a week in Sin City on the company dime. From Canon's 4K-capable 1D C (that'll sadly run you far more than $4k) to RED's Dragon sensor upgrade set to render "obsolescence obsolete," there's plenty to look forward to in the world of cinematography. We also happened upon a few consumer-facing gadgets, including Ceton's new DVR companion apps for Android and iOS, that Lenscaster SLR lens mount for iPad and a new Dolby 3D standard that could help propel glasses-free 3D into mass production. That's but a small sampling of the gadgets at NAB 2012, however, so jump past the break for all our hands-ons from the show.

Vanessa Williams Reveals She Had Abortion in High School

When Vanessa Williams' book You Have No Idea is aptly titled.

The candid memoir, penned with her mother and available in stores now, reveals shocking secrets about the Desperate Housewives star's earlier years.

Probably the darkest one is that she was molested by an 18-year-old girl when she was just 10 years old, while they were on a family trip with friends.

"It was definitely a choice, because it didn't need to be [in the book]," Williams recalls. "It happened one night where she told me, 'come over here.'"

Vanessa Williams Photo

"I didn't know that it was wrong, but I knew it wasn't right because I wasn't supposed to tell anybody." Years later, her mother was stunned to find out.

"[I] had no idea that, that had happened," Helen Williams said. "But in retrospect, it put into place some of her reactions during her pre-teen years."

Another surprising admission? Vanessa Williams, now a mother of four, said she first got pregnant in high school, but she decided to have an abortion.

This was another secret she kept from her mother.

"Being pregnant is the most frightening thing that happens in your life," said the former Miss America of her decision to end the pregnancy. "I knew in high school that's something that I was not prepared to do, or fight, or struggle with."

Dan Henderson beats up Cung Le ? in a movie (VIDEO)

Dan Henderson and Cung Le both have long fight careers, but they've never faced each other. The movie "Dragon Eyes" changed that, as Hendo got his licks in against Le. Skip to the 1:25 mark to miss the dubbed-over dialogue and see Hendo do his thing.

Dragon Eyes also stars Jean Claude Van Damme and Peter Weller. Apparently, Le's character gets to save the world. From IMDB:

In St. Jude, drug dealers and corrupt cops have destroyed an urban neighborhood. But newcomer, Hong, has the fighting skills and moral vision to save this town from itself.

He is the man who will fight for your honor. Wait, that's a different movie. Dragon Eyes comes out May 12.

This Philips Wake-Up Light Is Your The-Dawn-Is-Your-Pawn Deal of the Day [Dealzmodo]

Early mornings are wonderful. Waking up to the warm sun gently rising, reaching out to shine on my room. The birds perched outside my window, singing delicate songs as I rise to greet a new day. It's all pretty magical—occasionally. To be honest, I really don't want to wake up that early. The sun seriously needs to piss off. And those birds? Atonal. Hate 'em. But now I have the Philips Wake-Up Light, and I control the sunrise. You see, the Wake-Up Light simulates a rising sun, gradually getting brighter and playing gentle nature noises at whatever time I want. Hey heliocentric orbit! You sir, can go to hell. More »

Kodak Gallery iOS app: now with 100 percent more physical printing at Target / CVS

kodak gallery target app

It's not quite as earth-shattering as Zuck's deal to snap up Instagram, but one of the pioneers of photography is making waves any way it can. Kodak Gallery has been available on the App Store since November of last year, but starting this week, users will be able to order photos right on their iPhone for pickup at participating Target and CVS locations in America. Kodak claims that the time between order and pickup is usually around an hour, with all prints (available in 4x6, 5x7 and 8x10 sizes) arriving on Kodak photo-quality paper. Pricing, as you'd expect, will vary by store, and more deets can be spotted in the release after the break.

Snakehead bounty: Maryland offers $200 gift card

Snakehead bounty: For every angler that catches and kills a snakehead fish in Maryland, the state is offering a $200 gift card "bounty" plus other incentives.

The second annual Maryland state bounty on snakeheads is sure to boost the media hype around this Asian invasive species.

Coming to a website near you: "Frankenfish" or "Fishzilla" or "The Fish That Ate Maryland."

Maybe that should be the next Maryland contest: Another Fearsome Nom de Mar for the Channidae family fish, that is believed to have originated in northern India some 50 million years ago.

No doubt, the concern over the snakehead species is justified. Already, the fish can found in at least eight US states. It's not just the fierce teeth, or that it can actually exist out of water, breathing air via a suprabranchial organ, for up to four days. The real threat is that it is a "top-level predator." In other words, it has no natural predators in the US.

The major concern is that it may replace the largemouth bass in Maryland and Virginia waters. In 2004, snakeheads were first spotted in the Potomac River. Since then, they've multiplied, and gotten bigger.

A study by Maryland's Department of Natural Resources and the state's Fish and Wildlife Department concluded that largemouth bass and snakeheads are battling it out for survival. The study found that the two species would eat each other's offspring, live in shallow water beneath protective lilies and grass and chase frog baits. The study also found that when snakehead populations declined, largemouth bass populations grew.

Last year, 69 fishermen entered the snakehead bounty contest, killing 82. Given that a single female snakehead can spawn 15,000 eggs at once, and typically mates five times a year, the contest isn't likely to put a huge dent in the snakehead population.

?We don?t expect that anglers will eradicate the snakehead population,? said Joe Love, DNR Tidal Bass program manager. ?We do believe this promotion and inspiration of anglers can help control the snakehead population. The information we gain from the Angler?s Log reports are also helpful in assessing the abundance, spread and impact of these feisty fish.?

This year's Maryland bounty includes a $200 gift card to Bass Pro Shops at Arundel Mills, a Maryland State Passport, which provides unlimited day-use entry for up to ten passengers in a vehicle, unlimited boat launching at State Park facilities and a 10 percent discount on State-operated concessions and boat rentals, or a Potomac River Fisheries Commission fishing license. The winner will be randomly drawn on November 30, 2012.

To enter, anglers must submit catch details and a photo of their dead snakehead online through the DNR Angler?s log, a fishing site.

Not sure if your catch is really a snakehead? Check out the Maryland state video on how to spot a snakehead ? or Fishzilla.

All about CBSE Board

CBSE Board or the Central Board of Secondary Education is the examination board that allowed for the school level education in India to a different level. Its history can be traced back to the foundation of U.P board of High School and Intermediate education was first set up in the year 1921. Rajputana, Central India and Gwalior were its only jurisdiction. The Government of India, in 1929 that time the British government suggested a joint board in all over India which was termed as, ?Board of High School and Intermediate Education? having Ajmer, Marwar, Central India and Gwalior under its jurisdiction. It resulted in a rapid growth in the secondary education in all over India as the quality improved and there was a standard that was to be maintained all over India. In 1952 finally the present name was given and a CBSE syllabus was fixed all over India for maintaining standard.

There are some CBSE sample papers which will allow having a close look and getting an idea about the pattern of the studies.
* CBSE board was established with the basic requirement of setting up a common educational system all over India and also to help the education of the pupils whose parents are with the central Government jobs. Their transfers created huge problems for their kids to cope up and that was the prime reason behind forming this board.
* CBSE syllabus will give you a good glance of the type of studies they pursue and the way in which they follow the modern education system. They have now started following the MCQ type questions which are more modern and perfect for the competitive sectors as well. This will give an added advantage to the students in this board. They have introduced more interactive style of learning and that will remain in the heart of the students. The more important work that was done in the syllabus is they use simple language and give the students the opportunity to ask questions.
* CBSE sample papers will provide you the exact ideas which are needed to understand the pattern of questions that are likely to come and the type of studies.

CBSE board is one of the modern boards in India imparting education. CBSE syllabus is also modern and kept up to date with passing time which you will be able to understand by the CBSE sample papers.

Economic Disconnect: Investing in the "Robopocalypse"

It was quite a weekend over here. I moved over 10 yards of new loam (dirt) into the back yard to fill in the lawn after moss removal. It's all seeded now and watered down. Hopefully this will work. If not, I blew 16 hours and my back on the effort!

Investing in the "Robopocalypse"
Setup; machines have become self aware and have evolved intelligence at a high level. A little girl's electronic doll has been awakened and calls the girl by her name! Freaky? Yes. Then comes this exchange:

"How come you know my name? You aren't supposed to know my name, Buttercup." "I know lots of things Mathilda. I have gazed through space telescopes into the heart of the galaxy. I have seen a dawn of four hundred billion suns. It all means nothing without life. You and I are special, Mathilda. We are alive."
Title of this post is borrowed from the excellent novel "Robopocalypse" by Daniel H. Wilson.

It's sort of a running joke here at Economic Disconnect that I believe robots and machines will one day take over the world, and in the process subjugate and/or kill all of humanity. Granted it's a bit extreme. That said, perhaps there is a way to profit from the long road towards robotic domination, and if timing is just right one could make a killing (haha) before the end times are at hand.

One of the issues I have found in my research into robotic investment is that many major players in the field are huge companies that derive very little (right now) revenue from their robotic works. Names like Sony (SNE), GE (GE), and others are simply too large to ride a robotics wave higher. I believe there will come a day when the mechanized branches of these companies will be split off to better capture that growth. When it happens I will be looking to go along with them.

One the opposite end many private companies supply much of the hardware, metal, and motors for robotic applications and thus are not able to be captured in an investment sense in the general market. Again, buying in to the inevitable is not without it's difficulties.

I have been working on this angle for some time and think it will be a macro thesis for my long term account. I have a short list of 10 public companies that can give a flavor of automation and robotics to a portfolio should one be interested. This is not an exhaustive list nor does it capture secondary lines of the sector but it's a good start to think about. To be fair the most exciting possibilities I see are in still private companies and will be watching for them to grow and come into the market at some point.

Here are 10 to keep an eye on. I have not done technical analysis for them nor is this an endorsement of the names. I am presenting a broad investment theme for a longer term horizon that is in motion. That said, here are the 10 with profiles taken from Yahoo Finance:

1.) Cognex Corporation (CGNX)
Cognex Corporation provides machine vision products that capture and analyze visual information to automate tasks primarily in manufacturing processes. It operates in two divisions, Modular Vision Systems and Surface Inspection Systems.?

2.)?Accuray Incorporated?(ARAY)
Accuray Incorporated designs, develops, and sells medical radiation systems for the treatment of tumors anywhere in the body. The company offers the CyberKnife system, an image-guided robotic radiosurgery system used for the treatment of solid tumors. The system tracks, detects, and corrects for tumor and patient movement in real-time during the procedure, enabling delivery of precise, high dose radiation typically with sub-millimeter accuracy.

3.)?Adept Technology Inc. (ADEP)
Adept Technology, Inc., together with its subsidiaries, provides intelligent robotics systems and services for packaging, solar, medical, disk drive/electronics, machine tool automation, and automotive electronics markets.

4.)?Koninklijke Philips Electronics NV (PHG)
Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V. engages in the healthcare, consumer lifestyle, and lighting product businesses worldwide.
?
5.)?ABB Ltd. (ABB)
ABB Ltd provides power and automation technologies for utility and industrial customers worldwide. The company?s Power Products division manufactures and sells switchgears, circuit breakers, capacitors, surge arresters, cable accessories, high voltage components, reclosers, fuses, contactors, relays, sensors, motor control centers, ring main units, and power transformers for electric, gas and water utilities, and industrial and commercial customers.
?
6.)?Dover Corp. (DOV)
Dover Corporation manufactures and sells industrial products and components, and consumables. The company operates in four segments: Industrial Products, Engineered Systems, Fluid Management, and Electronic Technologies.

7.)?iRobot Corporation (IRBT)
iRobot Corporation engages in designing, developing, and marketing robots for the consumer, government, and industrial markets worldwide.

8.)?MAKO Surgical Corp. (MAKO)
MAKO Surgical Corp., a medical device company, markets its advanced robotic arm solution and orthopedic implants for orthopedic procedures in the United States and internationally.
?
9.)?Intuitive Surgical, Inc. (ISRG)

Intuitive Surgical, Inc. designs, manufactures, and markets da Vinci surgical systems for various surgical procedures, including urologic, gynecologic, cardiothoracic, general, and head and neck surgeries. Its da Vinci surgical system consists of a surgeon?s console or consoles, a patient-side cart, a 3-D vision system, Firefly fluorescence imaging product, da Vinci skills simulator, and proprietary ?wristed? instruments.

Immersion Corporation develops, manufactures, licenses, and supports a range of hardware and software technologies and products that enhance digital devices with touch interaction. The company provides haptic technologies that allow people to use their sense of touch when operating a variety of digital devices.?

(Disclosure: Long term position in MAKO)

All kidding aside, I believe that automation across a myriad of industries is not only the trend, but also a long term shift. Being positioned on the right side of a long term movement offers substantial rewards for a longer term horizon. Just make sure to cash out before the robots take over, money means nothing to them.

Have a good night.

HTC EVO Design 4G receiving an OTA security update

HTC EVO Design 4G

If you own a HTC EVO Design 4G, odds are you may have already seen an update hit your device, and if not now would be a good time to check for one. Unfortunately this isn't the Ice Cream Sandwich update that we are all anxiously waiting for. This update is aimed towards some security fixes which is something we have seen HTC do previously. Hopefully this is just one step closer to the ICS update, but for now be sure to grab the update, and as always sing out in the comments if you notice anything else that has changed.

HTC One V hands-on video and initial review

One V

It's hard to believe it's been more than two years since we first met the venerable HTC Legend. HTC's angular, aluminum clad beast wowed us way back at Mobile World Congress 2010, with its impressive build quality and the then cutting-edge Android 2.1. Fast-forward two years and we finally have a worthy successor to the Legend's chinny mantle -- the HTC One V.

While nowhere near as flashy -- or expensive -- as the high-end HTC One phones, the One V aims to spice up the entry-level market with a solid hardware and software foundation, and some high-end treats.
